It’s that time of year again when we’re blessed with cinematic gems from Aotearoa and beyond, thanks to the New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF). @nziff
𝙊𝙐𝙍 𝙋𝙄𝘾𝙆 is Mamoru Oshii’s Tenshi no Tamago (Angel’s Egg) (1985), newly restored in stunning 4K for its 40th anniversary and fresh from its screening at Cannes. A poetic, hypnotic, near-wordless anime that floats through airy soundscapes, watercolour washes, charcoal textures and surreal gothic architecture.
The visionary art of Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D) joins with a haunting, atmospheric score by Yoshihiro Kanno, known for his avant-garde anime compositions and contemporary classical music, creating a sensory dream space like no other.
For fans of Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor), Darren Aronofsky (mother!, The Fountain), Andrei Tarkovsky (Stalker, The Mirror) or anyone drawn to metaphorical cinema, this is a rare and unforgettable work of art.
